The Community Forklift Mission
We aim to lift up local communities by:
Making repairs and renovations possible for low-income folks, homeowners, and community groups
Creating green job training and employment opportunities
Keeping perfectly good building materials from going to waste
Providing resources to small, local businesses to stimulate and support economic development
Reducing demand for natural resources
Promoting community collaboration and skill building
Educating the public about local reuse and recycling options, green living and environmental sustainability
Community Forklift Celebrates 5 Years of Success
Since opening in November 2005, we've kept over five million dollars worth of building materials from going to waste. Instead of costing tax dollars to haul it out to landfills away from the city, these valuable materials have been kept here in the DC area to benefit the local economy.
Provided low cost materials and support to thousands of local homeowners, contractors, and builders, making it possible for them to repair substandard housing and restore historic buildings.
Grown to 16 green workers, and support additional employment through partner organizations (In 2009, we were so busy that we doubled our staff while other retailers were laying folks off).
Donated materials and assistance to dozens of non-profit organizations and low-income neighbors each year.
Attended or produced over 200 events to educate the public about local recycling resources and tips for greener homes.
Worked hard to spread the word about our services; we won "Best Hardware Store of 2010" in the Express, and "Best Home Goods Store of 2010" in the City Paper!
